When your child is struggling with anxiety, OCD, fears, or avoidance, it can be difficult to know what to do. You may find yourself offering constant reassurance, changing routines to prevent distress, or feeling unsure whether to step in or encourage your child to face a challenge.
You want to help your child feel better, but sometimes the things that bring relief in the moment can unintentionally make anxiety harder to manage over time.
At Resilient Growth Therapy, parent coaching provides guidance, practical tools, and support to help you respond with greater confidence while encouraging your child to build resilience, independence, and coping skills.
You don't have to navigate this alone.
Parent Coaching
Helping You Support Your Child Through Anxiety, OCD, and Big Emotions
How Parent Coaching Can Help
Parent coaching is a collaborative process designed to help you better understand your child's emotional and behavioral challenges and learn effective ways to respond.
Together, we will identify patterns that may be keeping your child stuck, explore strategies that fit your family's needs, and develop practical ways to support progress at home.
Parent coaching may be helpful if your child is experiencing:
Anxiety and excessive worry — frequent reassurance-seeking, fear of uncertainty, or difficulty managing everyday worries.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) — rituals, repetitive questions, checking, or family routines that have become organized around OCD.
Avoidance and specific fears — difficulty separating from caregivers, avoiding activities, or struggling to face situations that feel scary.
Big emotions and distress — difficulty tolerating discomfort, uncertainty, frustration, or changes in routine.
Challenges with independence — relying heavily on caregivers to manage situations that your child is learning to navigate.
Parent coaching can also be valuable when you feel stuck in recurring patterns and want to understand how to respond in ways that support your child's long-term growth.
SPACE: Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
One approach I incorporate into parent support is SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), an evidence-based, parent-focused treatment developed for childhood anxiety and OCD.
SPACE recognizes that parents play an important role in helping children learn to manage anxiety. Rather than placing the entire responsibility for change on the child, this approach helps parents make thoughtful changes to their own responses and family patterns.
SPACE focuses on two important areas:
1. Responding with support and understanding
Learn how to acknowledge your child's distress, communicate confidence in their ability to cope, and offer emotional support without reinforcing the idea that anxiety must always be eliminated.
2. Reducing family accommodation
Family accommodation occurs when parents adjust routines, provide repeated reassurance, participate in rituals, or change expectations to help a child avoid distress. These responses often come from love and a desire to help. However, they can sometimes maintain anxiety or OCD over time.
Through parent coaching, we can identify accommodation patterns and develop a gradual, supportive plan for changing them.
The goal is not to leave your child to manage difficult feelings alone. It is to help you support your child while creating opportunities for greater confidence, flexibility, and independence.
